~~Early Splint Gathering / Market Basket - Best Notched Handle - Authentic Old Green Paint~~

I am offering for your consideration an outstanding early painted rectangular splint basket. The previous owner spoke fondly of using this basket to gather herbs in the garden at her Pennsylvania farmhouse.

It has a fabulous hand hewn bentwood notched handle, which will accomodate more weight than one that is woven through the splints. In addition, it was made with X-bound rim wrapping.

It measures 19 3/4 inches x 12 1/2 inches across the rim, with 6 1/2 inch tall sides. Including the handle, it is approximately 12 inches tall.

There are no repairs or modifications, however there are a few breaks, with some loss. Although I rarely offer baskets with apologies, I feel that considering the good old paint and age, this is truly a rarely found utilitarian basket.

Circa mid 19th century. Berks County Pennsylvania origin.
