~~Choice 19th c. Cradle - Rare Size - Berks County~~
It still wears its original unaltered early surface and has the most wonderful early form I have ever seen. Both the hood and foot are arched, however the beautifully shaped hood sides are actually the tallest area of the entire cradle. The rockers are in the early style, as to be expected, with the circular ends. I read that this type of rocker was created to stop the cradle from tipping.
It is in a superb state of preservation. There is one ultra early repair (hairline) on one side of the hood end. Believe me..it is nothing major.
It is 29 inches in length, 10 1/4 to 12 1/4 inches wide, 13 inches tall and has 14 inch long rockers. An extraordinary long narrow form. Perhaps it was created for a doll, however because of the rarity in size, it is entirely possible that it was used for an infant.
I feel that it may be difficult to understand the actual dimension and incredible presence of this piece, but I am sure that even the most discriminating collector will be very pleased.
Early nail construction. Circa Mid 19th c. Pennsylvania.
