~~RARE Early 19th c. Sugar Chest / Box - Dovetailed Case & Drawer - Original Sugar Cutter - PA.~~
I have included numerous images that will show the striking hand dovetailed construction as well as the function of this early box, however I will briefly explain how it was used.
Upon opening the lid, you will find the original sugar cutter blade with a bulbous turned handle. The blade was used to cut pieces of sugar from a sugar cone. The sugar, or particles thereof, would fall through the holes in the base of the box into the drawer below, where it could then be retrieved for use.
The construction of the case was beautifully and professionally executed, and is quite visible from all sides. The hinges, bone (or ivory) escutheon and knob appear to be all original.
The dry surface appears untouched giving it that desirable primitive look that we all look for.
The drawer was hand dovetailed on all four sides as was the case.
This piece measures 15 1/4 inches wide x 10 3/4 inches deep x 8 inches tall.
The sugar cones that you see will be included.
Circa: Early 19th century.
Presently in my private collection. Originally found in Berks County Pennsylvania. An extremely rare find.
