~~Magnificant EARLY Splint Basket - Notched Handle - BEST Form EVER!!~~

I am offering for your consideration a magnificant early splint farm/gathering basket.

It has a carved bent wood handle that is notched into a double wrapped rim.

The bottom is what is called 'checkerwork' or 'open weave'. This would allow the loose unwanted contents to fall through to avoid damage.

The absolute BEST all original surface. It is a nutty brown color with good age, especially where it would have been handled over the years. The handle has an especially nice rich patina.

The inside rim of this basket measures 9 1/4 inches x 91/4 inches. The base measures 8 inches x 8 inches. The sides measure 5 3/4 inches, 8 1/2 inches tall when including the handle.

It is in near perfect condition, with the minor exception a small amount missing rim wrap, which would be the second strip (of the double wrap).

Circa late 19th c. Private collection. Pennsylvania.
