~~Rare 19th c. Flatback / "Flushback" Cookie Cutter - Berks County - Private Collection~~

I am offering for your consideration a rare early Pennsylvania tin flatback / flush back cookie cutter. The form is that of a folky bird and is most assuredly one of a kind.

This is quite a large cookie cutter and one of the earliest I have found to date. It measures approximately 5 inches x 6 inches x 1 inch deep. Because it has such a deep cutting edge, it will actually free stand.

There is a nice large centered hole. Great detail with early oxidation and little surface rust.

A "Flatback" cookie cutter is the forerunner of the later ones made with a handle. They do not have a handle, nor did they ever have one! They were made with a hole, at times somewhat large, in the flat tin backer. They would have been handled by either the edge of the tin backer or the hole, depending on its size. I also use the term ''flush back'' because the backer follows the form of the cutter. These are quite rare.

Circa early to mid 1800's. Berks County Pennsylvania origin. Private collection.
