~~Pre Civil War Whetstone Horn - Rare Original Mustard Paint~~

I am offering for your consideration an exceptional pre Civil War (circa 1850) Pennsylvania field horn, out of Berks County.

This horn was originally used to hold the whetstone and oil for sharpening tools while in the field. A hand forged iron hook was placed on the rim (as shown), and has a nice early form. This would allow the horn to hang by the farmer's side, while working in the field, holding the whetstone and oil for its intended use.

It measures 8 1/2 inches in length. The nicely worn surface wears its original mustard paint. It is a rare occurance to find a piece such as this in good old paint. The maker carved decorative scribe marks around the exterior, which was likely a means of identifying his work.

Circa 1850. Originally found on an 18th century farm in Berks County Pennsylvania.

An rare honest American primitive.
