~~Large 19th c. New England Pantry Box - Thick Walls - Bentwood Handle~~
It measures 11 1/4 - 11 1/2 inches wide (across the lid) and is 5 3/4 inches tall. This box is quite substantial and early, with unbelievable 1/4 + inch thick walls. If you are in search for a good early one to grace your stack, don't pass it up!
It is rich with patina and remains unaltered.
There is some shrinkage on the lid which caused a natural gap between the lid and the banded edge. For this reason, you will find that the lid fits in a particular position. This type of age shrinkage is not unlike an early dough bowl, that may somewhat alter the form, yet in this case, it is only noticable when positioning the lid.
This piece is in excellent condition for its age with expected, but minor wear.
Circa: 19th century New England. 100% American.
