~~Rare Early Berks County PA. Flax Breaker & Flax~~

I am offering for your consideration a rare one piece American flax breaker. The nice bundle of circa 1840 Pennsylvania grown flax is to be included.

After the stems of the flax are washed and allowed to dry, they would have been scutched (beaten), by using a flax breaker, to separate the fibers from other material and to crush the pith. Flax was used to make linen. Linen, fabric or yarn made from the fiber of flax, was one of the first vegetable fibers known to people.

This piece is in excellent substantial condition with a beautifully age appropriate patina. It was hand made out of a single piece of wood.

It measures 17 inches in length and 3 3/4 inches at the widest point. No repairs & no restoration.

Circa: 1840-1870. Berks County Pennsylvania origin. The flax was grown in Oley PA.
