~~Rare Primitive 19th c. Treen Feed Bag Opener-Berks County PA. ~~
This piece, as shown, was created with a bentwood section that was mortised and wedged into a straight wooden end. The ends were carved to a point where on each side you will find a protruding metal pin.
When in use, the metal pins were used to stabilize the opener onto the seam area of the feedback's fabric, and the curved bentwood section was placed accordingly to hold the fabric feedbag open. Pieces such as this were found on farms in Pennsylvania and were entirely hand made for the specific use mentioned.
It is 14 1/2 inches in width x 9 3/4 inches in height. All original with no repairs & no restoration.
Excellent condition. Displays beautifully on a peg rack or simply by hanging on a square nail.
Circa: 1840-1860. Berks County Pennsylvania origin.
A real honest find!
