~~Impressive Rare Early Hanging Candle / Salt Box - Lollipop Form - Single Drawer~~

I am offering for your consideration a rare fine early hanging candle or salt box with a drawer.

It was suggested to me that it may possibly be a pipe box, however the depth of the interior of the box is 7 1/2 - 9 inches (from front to back). I have included numerous images and description, so you can make your best decision.

With its stunning original old surface, outstanding form and fine architectural quality, it is truly an amazing find, obviously built by an exceptionally talented cabinetmaker.

The form of the hanger is what I would call a lollipop, but in its entirety, similar to a keystone. About 1/2 inch from the edge the creator of this piece included a decorative inlay or a finely raised line. This same decorative element also surrounds the recessed front panel of the box. The drawer knob is a tiny mushroom shaped wooden knob. The tiny turned brass feet / knobs were present when this box was purchased and may or may not be original.

It is 21 3/4 inches tall x 8 1/2 inches wide x 6 inches deep. Quite large and showy!

This piece is in beautiful condition, though for the sake of accuracy I must further explain. There is a small, rectangular expertly done early restoration on the upper right side of the slant lid (as shown) and an ever so minor hairline on the upper left side of the slant lid. There is what I will call an indention on the rear left corner of the box, which was likely present when made.

I only want to add that in my opinion, this is by far the most impressive early hanging box that I have yet to find.

Ca. Early 1800's. Originally found in New England. Presently in a private collection.
